A leadership initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the United States Conference of Mayors

Macon, GA

Mayor: Jim Marshall (1996-2000)
Institute Session: 1996 MICD 21

“I was a new mayor who had inherited a plan to replace our main street with a 45-mph throughway. I knew in my gut this was wrong, but I wasn’t sure what to do about it. Thanks to what I learned at the Institute, I could get away with saying, ‘over my dead body.’ My participation encouraged me, taught me, and gave me the contacts I needed to stop the throughway and then reallocate the money toward a redesign and revitalization effort that is now underway, saving our downtown core. But for MICD, I doubt we would have ended up saving the four city blocks that are now being rebuilt.”
