National Advisory Council Welcomes New Members, Gives Guidance on MICD's Gulf Coast Involvement

SAN FRANCISCO - The National Advisory Council of the Mayors' Institute on City Design met June 27, 2006 in San Francisco. Consisting of leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to urban design and its ability to transform cities, the National Advisory Council is charged with increasing the impact of the program by helping to boost its visibility and support.

The primary topic of discussion at the June meeting was the MICD's involvement in the recovery efforts of the Gulf Coast. The Mayors' Institute will utilize the ideas and recommendations of its National Advisory Council members as it continues its outreach to the affected mayors in the region.

At this meeting the Mayors' Institute welcomed its newest Advisory Council members. Joining the distinguished group were Eugenie Birch, Chair of the Department of City and Regional Planning and the University of Pennsylvania; Mary Margaret Jones, President of Hargreaves Associates; and Marilyn Taylor, Chairman of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Stacey Davis Stewart, President and CEO of the Fannie Mae Foundation, was also welcomed, though unable to attend the meeting.

The new members were joined at the meeting by MICD Founder Joseph P. Riley Jr., Mayor of the City of Charleston; Michael Guido, Mayor of the City of Dearborn and President of the United States Conference of Mayors; Joan Abrahamson, President of the Jefferson Institute; Mark Falcone, Managing Director of Continuum Partners; Reese Fayde, CEO of Living Cities; Rob Forbes, Founder and Director of Design within Reach; Harvey Gantt, Founder and Principal of Gannt Huberman Architects and former Mayor of the City of Charlotte; Richard Moe, President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation; and Alex Garvin, President and CEO of Garvin and Associates.
